Spiritual Gifts (Class 07): Generosity and Mercy

Class Notes:

Spiritual Gifts: Generosity & Mercy (Romans 12:8)

1) Generosity

Key texts

• Romans 12:8; 1 Timothy 6:18–19; Luke 12:13–21; Acts 2:42–47; 4:32–37; 5:1–11; 1 Corinthians 16:1–4; Galatians 6:9–10; Matthew 25:34–40; John 6:5–13; Luke 21:1–4; Matthew 6:19–21; 2 Corinthians 9:6–7.

Working definition

• Biblical generosity = recognizing that our time, talent, and treasure belong to God, then offering them back as living sacrifices (Rom 12:1) cheerfully and voluntarily to serve others and honor Christ.

Word senses (NT nuance)

• “Gives…with simplicity/sincerity/liberality” (single-hearted, not mixed motives).
• “Ready to share/impart” (eager preparedness to give).
• “Sharing/koinonia” (practical fellowship: needs met in community).

What generosity opposes

• Selfish accumulation (Luke 12:13–21).
• Performative giving and compulsory schemes (pledging/duty-driven giving can distort motives). In the NT, giving flows from grace, not coercion (cf. Acts 5 highlights the danger of lying, not a command to give a set amount).

Portraits & illustrations

• Zacchaeus: salvation produced restitution and open-handedness (Luke 19).
• Boy with loaves and fish: small gift, big impact (John 6).
• Widow’s mite: value measured by sacrifice, not amount (Luke 21).
• Sheep & Goats: care in food, drink, clothing, presence—not merely money (Matt 25).

Priorities & scope

• “Especially the household of faith” (Gal 6:10) → the church cares first for its own needy (e.g., widows indeed), yet remains open-handed to outsiders as a witness of mercy.

Motives & mindset

• Give cheerfully and willingly (2 Cor 9:6–7).
• Store treasure in heaven (Matt 6:19–21): your heart follows your treasure.
• Wesley’s maxim: “Do all the good you can… as long as ever you can.” (A succinct summary of the generous life.)

Practical applications

• Budget time, skills, and money for gospel use.
• Look for quiet needs (prisoners, widows, single parents, new believers).
• Give with simplicity (no fanfare), readiness (planned margin), sharing (koinonia).
• Evaluate church giving by kingdom fruit, not just totals.

2) Mercy

Key texts

• Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:7; Luke 10:25–37 (Good Samaritan); 1 Kings 3:16–28 (Solomon); Psalm 23:6; Psalm 103:13.
• Word-family ideas: ḥesed (steadfast love), deep compassion, eleos (mercy)—a covenant, compassionate response that addresses misery with remedy.

Working definition

• Mercy = deep, gut-level compassion that moves toward the hurting to relieve their misery in practical ways, because God first showed us mercy in Christ.

The logic of mercy

• “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy” (Matt 5:7).
• God’s mercy at the cross grounds both grace and peace; merciful people mirror their Father.

Mercy in action (characteristics)

1. Help the hurting nearby (Prov 3:27; Luke 10).
2. Value people over rigid policies (Jesus and the Sabbath controversies).
3. Be patient with quirks (our neighbors’ “idiosyncrasies”).
4. Give second chances (as God has given us many).
5. Be kind to offenders (overcome evil with good).

Portraits

• Solomon’s judgment: the true mother’s gut-compassion reveals real love (1 Kgs 3).
• Good Samaritan: saw, felt compassion, acted, paid, promised follow-up (Luke 10).

Practical applications

• Build habits of seeing needs (slow down, ask, notice).
• Carry simple “mercy tools”: gift cards, time-margin, rides, check-ins, meals.
• In conflicts, practice kindness + truth, not retaliation.
• Tie mercy to discipleship rhythms (small groups, diaconal teams, widow care lists).
