Class 04 — Spiritual Discernment in an Age of Counterfeits

Where should we draw our lines?

Big Idea

Spiritual gifts are a blessing from God—but gifts can be claimed, counterfeited, or weaponized. Scripture commands us to test teachers by doctrine and fruit, not by displays of power.

---

1) Bible Warnings About Gift-Abuse & False Teachers

• Simony (buying spiritual power): Acts 8:18–23 (Simon Magus).
• Self-promotion & showboating: 3 John 9 (Diotrephes); 1 Cor 12–14 (misuse of gifts).
• False prophets/teachers: 2 Pet 2:1; Jude 10–13 vivid metaphors:
  • Hidden reefs • Self-feeding shepherds • Waterless clouds
  • Fruitless, uprooted trees • Wild waves • Wandering stars
• Recommended: Justin Peters, “Clouds Without Water.”

---

2) Can a False Teacher Have Real Gifts?

• Yes, gifts ≠ salvation.
  • Matt 7:22–23 — “I never knew you” despite prophecy/exorcisms/mighty works.
  • 1 Cor 13:1–3 — Gifts without love = nothing.
  • Balaam (Num 22–24; 2 Pet 2:15) — truthful prophecy, corrupt heart.
• Satanic “power”?
  • R.C. Sproul: Only God performs true miracles; demons do lying wonders (deception/manipulation within created order).
  • Others allow that Satan may be permitted limited miraculous acts.
• Either way: 2 Thess 2:9–10 — “false signs and wonders” deceive those who refuse to love the truth.

Two anchors:

• Gifts ≠ grace. Conversion isn’t proven by giftedness (cf. Caiaphas, John 11:49–52).
• Fruit > gifts. We know them by fruit (Gal 5:22–23), not flash.

---

3) Case Study: Benny Hinn (as a pattern)

Claims: healing/prophecy/miracles, “apostle,” millions converted.
Pattern of problems (documented by Costi Hinn, Mike Winger, et al.):

• Failed prophecies (e.g., destruction of homosexual community in ’90s; Castro’s death/timing; Jesus physically appearing on stage; COVID claims).
• Staged environments, exaggerated/fabricated healings; editing/manipulation; coercive force on stage.
Takeaway: A ministry marked by failed prophecies, unverifiable “healings,” and manipulation should be rejected.

---

4) Word of Faith & “Always Be Healed” Claims

• Teaching: God always heals if you “have enough faith.”
• Pastoral damage: Blaming the suffering for “lack of faith.”
• Functional vs. Organic healing:
  • Functional (subjective/invisible symptoms) vs. Organic (objective/verifiable: withered limbs, blindness, paralysis).
  • Jesus/apostles healed organic, public, undeniable conditions (John 9; widespread Gospel accounts).
  • Why do televised “miracles” avoid amputees?
• Biblical reality:
  • God heals—but not universally nor on demand.
  • 2 Tim 4:20 (Trophimus left sick), 1 Tim 5:23 (Timothy’s ailments).
  • Isa 53/1 Pet 2:24 speaks primarily of atonement/forgiveness, not a guarantee of present physical healing.

---

5) Prosperity Theology (Brief Note)

• “Health-wealth” teaching: sow a seed → guaranteed blessing.
• Treats faith as a formula, not trust in Christ whatever the providence.
• Spreads especially in the global South; see Africa Statement on Prosperity Gospel & Word of Faith (public declaration against these errors).

---

6) “Slain in the Spirit” & Stage Effects

• Falling/backwards phenomena often tied to suggestion, hypnosis, crowd dynamics (cf. demonstrations by mentalists like Derren Brown).
• Biblical “falling dead” examples (Nadab & Abihu) are judgment, not normative blessing.
• Be cautious about psychological manipulation dressed as power.

---

7) Why Naming Names Matters

• Modern ethos: “tolerate everything.” Scripture: intolerant of false teaching.
• Paul and Jude name and specify; shepherds warn of wolves (Acts 20:28–31).
• Goal isn’t controversy—it’s protection of souls.

Illustration: Jonestown shows physical destruction under a cult.
Prosperity/Word-of-Faith charlatans do spiritual damage—stealing hope, money, and often the faith of the weak.
