Spiritual Gifts CLASS 01

Here is the link to the video for our first class.

Here is a summary of what was taught in this class:

Key Divisions in Spiritual Gifts

1. Definition of the gifts – Different traditions interpret prophecy, tongues, knowledge, discernment differently.
2. Distribution of the gifts – Universal or selective? (e.g., tongues in Pentecostal/charismatic theology as evidence of Spirit baptism).
3. Continuation of the gifts – Debate over cessationism (gifts ceased) vs. continuationism (gifts remain).

Biblical Sources

• Primary Passages:
  • 1 Corinthians 12–14 (longest treatment).
  • Romans 12 (seven gifts).
• Secondary References: 1 Peter 4; Ephesians 4.
• Tongues specifically: Acts, 1 Corinthians, Mark 16 (longer ending, debated authenticity).

Working Definition of Spiritual Gifts

A spiritual gift is a God-given motivation empowered by the Holy Spirit that expresses itself in ministry and becomes a manifestation of the Spirit within the church.

Threefold Breakdown (from 1 Cor. 12:4–6)

• Motivation – internal gift (e.g., mercy)
• Ministry – the outlet (e.g., hospital visitation)
• Manifestation – visible evidence of Spirit at work (e.g., comfort given to patient)

Four Foundational Truths

1. Source – Indwelling Holy Spirit (John 14:16–17; Rom. 8:9).
2. Distribution – Universal but diverse (1 Cor. 12:7, 12:29; 1 Pet. 4:10).
3. Purpose – Edification of the body, especially local church (1 Cor. 14:12; Eph. 4:11–12).
4. Goal – God’s glory alone (1 Pet. 4:10–11).

Illustrations

• Dinner Party (Richard Taylor) – Different gifts respond uniquely when a meal is spilled:
  • Prophecy: declares need for action.
  • Service: cleans up.
  • Teaching: analyzes cause.
  • Exhortation: encourages involvement.
  • Generosity: pays for new food.
  • Administration: organizes plan.
  • Mercy: comforts embarrassed hostess.
• Orchestra Analogy – Every instrument contributes something, none everything. Harmony requires all parts.

Four Aspects of Harmony

• Mutual function (all parts work together).
• Mutual importance (no part greater/lesser).
• Mutual edification (care & upbuilding of one another).
• Mutual dependence (interdependence, not independence).

Closing Admonitions

• This is a historically divisive subject—handle disagreements graciously.
• Test all traditions by Scripture; treat most disagreements as tertiary, not grounds for division.
• Every believer has gifts; church membership essential for their use.
• Aim: discern motivation, ministry, and manifestation of your gift for the common good and God’s glory.
