Theological Context: Anthropology and Original Sin

Anthropology (the study of man) was central to the Pelagian Controversy, focusing on the nature of humanity and the human will.

• Augustine’s View:
  • Humanity’s will is not free in an absolute sense but is bound to sin and requires divine grace to obey God.
  • Doctrine of Original Sin: Adam’s sin corrupted all his descendants, leaving humanity incapable of seeking God apart from grace.
  • Man retains the ability to make choices (free will, liberium arbitrium) but lacks moral liberty (libertas), meaning he cannot choose righteousness independently.

R.C. Sproul: Augustine described humanity as a massa peccati (mass of sin), emphasizing our dependence on sovereign grace to escape spiritual death.

The Reformers: Luther and Calvin upheld Augustine’s anthropology, linking it to the doctrines of grace foundational to the Reformation.

The Pelagian Controversy

Pelagius’s Teachings:

• Rejected the concept of Original Sin, asserting:
  • Adam’s sin did not corrupt human nature.
  • Each person is born morally neutral and retains full autonomy to choose good or evil.
• Believed God’s commands implied human ability to obey without divine assistance.
• Denied that grace was necessary for salvation, except to provide instruction.

Augustine’s Response:

• Human nature is inherently corrupt and incapable of righteousness without divine grace.
• Even the will to turn to God is a gift from Him.
• Pelagius’s views undermined the necessity of Christ’s atoning work and God’s grace.

Outcome:

• Pelagianism was condemned as heretical at:
  • Council of Carthage (418 AD)
  • Council of Ephesus (431 AD)
• Pelagius was exiled, but his ideas persisted in the form of Semi-Pelagianism.

Semi-Pelagianism and the Council of Orange (529 AD)

While Pelagianism denied the need for grace, Semi-Pelagianism argued:

• Grace is necessary but not sufficient.
• Humans must cooperate with grace through their own will.

The Council of Orange:
Convened to address Semi-Pelagianism, this local council reinforced Augustine’s teachings. Key affirmations included:

1. Adam’s sin affected both body and soul, corrupting humanity entirely (Canon 1).
2. Humanity’s inability to seek God without divine grace (Canon 8).
3. Even the desire for faith originates from God (Canon 5).

Key Conclusion:
Grace is not merely helpful; it is essential. Without grace, humanity cannot love God, believe in Him, or perform any good works.
