Fall of the Roman Empire, Christological Controversies, and Augustine’s Influence

Introduction

The 4th century saw the church transition from persecution to prominence as the religion of the Roman Empire. However, the 5th century marked the fall of the Western Roman Empire, setting the stage for the Medieval Age.

Fall of the Roman Empire

• The Division of Rome:
  • In 286 CE, Emperor Diocletian divided the empire into East and West for stability.
  • By 395 CE, the two sections operated independently: the Western Empire (Rome) and the Eastern Empire (Constantinople).
• Key Events Leading to the Fall:
  • 410 CE: The Visigoths, led by Alaric, sacked Rome, signaling the empire’s vulnerability.
  • 476 CE: The Western Roman Empire fell when Odovacar deposed the last emperor, Romulus Augustulus.
• Debates on the Fall:
  • Some historians blame internal instability, economic issues, and leadership failures.
  • Others attribute it to external pressures from barbarian invasions.
  • The role of Christianity in weakening Roman resilience is debated, though the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire remained strong and Christian for nearly 1,000 years.
• Impact on Christianity:
  • Refugees from Rome sought solace in the church.
  • Augustine of Hippo addressed the spiritual meaning of Rome’s fall, laying foundations for Christian theology in his work The City of God.

Christological Controversies

Theological debates about Christ’s nature persisted after the Council of Nicaea (325 AD). These debates culminated in later councils:

1. Council of Constantinople (381 AD)
2. Council of Ephesus (431 AD)
3. Council of Chalcedon (451 AD)

The Chalcedonian Definition (451 AD):

• Affirmed that Christ is one person with two natures (fully divine and fully human), united without confusion or division.
• Rejected heresies:
  • Eutyches (Monophysitism): Claimed Christ had one fused divine-human nature.
  • Nestorius (Nestorianism): Argued Christ’s natures were separate, effectively making Him two persons.

Key Outcome:

• Established the doctrine of the Hypostatic Union (two distinct yet united natures in Christ).
• Cemented orthodoxy, though it caused schisms with Oriental Orthodox churches, which adhered to Miaphysitism(one united divine-human nature).

Theological Influence of Augustine

Life and Conversion:

• Born in 354 in North Africa to Monica, a devout Christian, and Patricius, a Roman official.
• Converted to Christianity after a dramatic encounter with Romans 13:13-14, leaving behind a hedonistic lifestyle.

Contributions to Christian Thought:

• Bishop of Hippo (present-day Annaba, Algeria) from 395 to his death in 430.
• The City of God: Written in response to Rome’s fall, distinguished between the temporary “Earthly City” and the eternal “Heavenly City.”
  • Emphasized the sovereignty of God over human history.
  • Offered hope for a divine kingdom amidst earthly chaos.

Legacy:

• Influenced both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology.
• His views on sin, grace, and the church remain foundational.

Final Days:

• Witnessed the advance of the Vandals toward Hippo.
• Died on August 28, 430, reading penitential psalms, trusting in Christ’s peace.
