Class 07 Contemporary Ethical Issues: Social Issues

Understanding the Challenge Social issues such as wealth and poverty, equality vs. equity, racism, and immigration are among the most debated topics in modern society. Even within Christianity, there is no universal agreement on how these issues should be addressed. Conservatives and liberals often cite Scripture to support conflicting views, which can cause confusion over whether the Bible speaks clearly to these matters.

DEI and Social Justice DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) is embraced by some Christians who see it as aligned with biblical hospitality and justice. Others criticize DEI as rooted in secular or neo-Marxist ideologies that undermine biblical principles of sin, justice, and personal responsibility.

Thomas Sowell, in The Quest for Cosmic Justice, contrasts traditional justice (equal rules for all) with cosmic justice (correcting every perceived disadvantage). He warns that the pursuit of cosmic justice often leads to coercion and undermines true fairness and liberty.

Financial Ethics and Vocation

• Work is not a result of the fall (Gen 2:15) but was made difficult by it (Gen 3:18-19).
• Christians are called to be diligent and not lazy (2 Thess. 3:10).
• The Protestant Work Ethic reframed vocation as a calling from God.
• Wealth is not inherently sinful; waste and idolatry are (1 Tim. 6:10).

Wealth and Poverty

• Prosperity Gospel teaches that faith guarantees health and wealth.
• Poverty Gospel promotes voluntary poverty as a sign of faith.
• Neither extreme is biblically grounded.
• Examples: Jesus challenged the rich young ruler (Matt. 19:16-24); Lydia used her wealth to serve the church (Acts 16:13-15).

Economics and Systems

• The U.S. thrives under Free Market Capitalism: liberty, individualism, and reward for innovation.
• Socialism/Communism aim for equal outcomes through wealth redistribution and communal ownership.
• Biblical giving is always voluntary (Acts 5:4; 2 Cor. 9:7).
• While radical generosity is encouraged, forced giving is not biblically supported.

Racism and the Image of God

• “Race” is a modern construct based on appearance; biblically, there is one human race (Acts 17:26).
• Racism is a sinful belief in superiority based on superficial traits.
• Evolutionary theory has been used to justify racism, but the Bible upholds equal dignity.
• Kinism, a view promoting racial (or “Kin”) separation.

Immigration and Ordo Amoris (Order of Love)

• Some Christians emphasize compassion for the foreigner (Lev. 19:34; Matt. 25:35).
• Others emphasize law, borders, and national responsibility (Rom. 13).
• The biblical balance involves loving God and neighbor, pursuing justice and mercy.

Equality vs. Equity

• Equality = equal treatment/opportunity.
• Equity = adjusted treatment to achieve equal outcomes.
• The Bible affirms both impartiality (Lev. 19:15) and special care for the vulnerable (Prov. 31:9).
• Christians must navigate this tension carefully.
