Contemporary Ethical Issues: Entertainment

Entertainment & the Age of Consumption

• We live in an era of constant stimulation and entertainment addiction.
• Key question: Is there a moral dimension to entertainment?

PART 1: Alcohol and Recreational Drugs

• Alcohol is one of the most debated issues in Christian ethics.
• Scripture shows both warnings against drunkenness (Eph. 5:18) and blessings of wine (Ps. 104:15).

Important biblical principle: “I will not be mastered by anything” – 1 Corinthians 6:12

• Other substances:
  • Caffeine, nicotine – socially accepted but potentially controlling.
  • Marijuana – raises questions about recreational use and impairment.
  • Medical drugs (e.g., fentanyl, oxycodone) have a place—but recreational abuse destroys.

Ethical takeaway: God’s gifts can be enjoyed—but not abused.

PART 2: Technology and Media

• Pornography is now instant, anonymous, and highly addictive—even among Christians.
• Social media reshapes relationships—shallow interactions replace real connection.
• Constant media consumption shortens attention spans and dulls spiritual alertness.

Biblical Principles:

“I have made a covenant with my eyes…” – Job 31:1
“The fruit of the Spirit is… self-control” – Gal. 5:22–23

PART 3: Liberty vs. Licentiousness

• Christians have freedom in Christ—but not a license to sin (Gal. 5:13).
• Conscience is valuable but not the final authority—Scripture is.
• Some may abstain where the Bible permits; others must submit when Scripture forbids.

Test for ethical living: Does this glorify God? (1 Cor. 10:31)

CONCLUSION: 

• We are not ascetics (rejecting pleasure), nor Gnostics (despising the physical).
• We are called to wise, joyful living within the boundaries of God’s Word.
• Use discernment. Enjoy God’s gifts. Glorify Him in all you do.
